Terra Australis & Mare Australis

On the Terra Australis you will cruise through the World's most pristine and magnificent areas. In comfort and safety you will pass through the Straits of Magellan and the Beagle Channel through the land of fire called Tierra del Fuego. On your cruise you will encounter magnificent views of glaciers, the awesome Patagonian scenery, penguins, whales and other of nature's inhabitants of this incredible part of the World. While opportunities for close contact with nature abound your comfort is not forgotten.

From the professional guides who make sure you get to know the area to our crew with whom service to you is always uppermost to our complete list of amenities you will indeed return with memories to be treasured for a life time. The ship has 55 cabins, all of which have normal (low) beds and great views. There are 2 suites, 30 AA cabins, of which 7 have a double bed, 10 A cabins, 9 B cabins, two triple cabins and 2 single cabins. All cabins offer the passenger the amenities of a great hotel...private bathroom with shower, heating and air-conditioning, chest of drawers, closet, bedside table, internal telephones and 110 volts electrical current.

The Mare Australis will make its maiden voyage November 2002.

The vessel cruises between Punta Arenas, Chile and Ushuaia, Argentina. There is the option of round-trip or one-way travel from either port. Come aboard for the cruise of a lifetime!

LPV1300PUQ: THE PIONEER ROUTE ON BOARD M/V TERRA AUSTRALIS or MARE AUSTRALIS

8days/ 7nights

      Day 1:Punta Arena Magellan Straits. (Tuesday on Terra Australis, Saturday on Mare Australis)

      13.00-18.00:Passengers check-in at local dock Arturo Prat, O´Higgins
      18.00-19.00 Boarding Terra Australis Cruiser. The crew headed by the Captain will welcome you aboard for cocktails with your cruise companions. Immediately after, the ship will depart towards the end of the world. Along the mythical Strait of Magellan, we will sail through Patagonian Channels and around Tierra del Fuego.

      Day 2:Parry Bay-Marinelli Glacier-Tucker Islet (Wednesday on Terra Australis, Sunday on Mare Australis)
      With the first light of dawn we will continue through Almirantazgo Fjord to Parry Bay. We will disembark by zodiac to explore this Glacier. Our second excursion during the day is near Marinelli Glacier, where we will take a walk to see the beaver dams and the Magellan Forests. We will also see a Sea lion colony close at hand. Later, at Tucker Isle, we will visit a small colony of Magellan Penguins. Here we are also likely to encounter dolphins. Once back onboard, we will see that on the other side of the island there is a Colony of cormorants. After a few minutes of sailing there is a rocky outcrop with a large colony of sea lions and seals.

      Day 3: Agostini Fjord-Serrano & D Agostini Glacier,(Thursday on Terra Australis, Monday on Mare Australis)
      Dawn finds us by the D Agostini Fjord where we can view the Serrano Glacier. Later we will disembark close to the D Agostini Glacier, one of the most impressive in the Patagonian channels. An excursion by zodiac will take us ashore and then a short walk to an observation point. Hopefully see the sudden fall of enormous chunks of ice, calving of the glacier face, the making of an iceberg. Afterward the ship will sail through the Strait of Magellan to reach Brecknock Channel.

      Day 4:Beagle Channel, Yendegaia & Port Williams,(Friday on Terra Australis, Tuesday on Mare Australis*)
      After sailing across Desolation Bay and through the O'Brian and Balleneros Channels we will enter the northwest extension of the Beagle Channel to explore the majestic Glaciers Avenue: Spain, Romanche, Germany, Italy,France and Holland. Then we will disembark at Yendegaia Bay, where the first Chilean farm of Tierra del Fuego is located.During this visit we will be able to see the settlement remains of the Yagan Indians. We will visit the site of the old farm and walk to an observation point. During the walk we will be introduced the great variety of vegetation that survives in this hostile client of the Island of Tierra del Fuego. There will also be numerous birds such as geese and occasional Condors. In the afternoon we will stop at Port Williams, the most southern city in the world, were you may take optional tours to the Martin Gusinde museum, the Beavers lagoon or a fly over of the impressive Cape Horn.

      *The Mare Australis includes Cape Horn National Park in its itenerary.

      Day 5:Port Williams, Ushuaia, (Saturday on Terra Australis, Wednesday on Mare Australis)

      Departure from Port Williams. We will sail slowly to arrive very early to Ushuaia, the most important Argentine city on Tierra del Fuego. Here you may choose among optional tours of the most Southern region in South America, Tierra del Fuego National Park or Escondido lake or Fagnano lake. Those passengers who took the Punta Arenas-Ushuaia option disembark and new passengers embark between 17.00 and 19.00 with destination Punta Arenas. Thursday

      Day 6:Pia Glacier-Garibaldi Glacier (Sunday on Terra Australis, Thursday on Mare Australis)

      We will sail back across the main branch of the Beagle Channel to disembark at Pia Glacier. A short walk will take us to to an observation point where we can also see more examples of the area's flora. The glacier can be seen in all its glory from the view point as well as the array of icebergs. This Glacier's source is in the middle of the Darwin Range of mountains and reaches the sea at Pia Bay. In the afternoon we will enter Garibaldi Fjord where we will be able to enjoy views of the Glacier of the same name and the impressive snow fields of the Darwin Range. On the route along the bay the ship makes a short stop to visit the sea lions.We will take the opportunity to disembark in zodiacs at one of the beaches. There we will trek to the lush vegetation and the virgin forests that cover the mountain slopes. Afterwards continue sailing through O'Brian and Ballenero Channels, Bahiacute a Desolada, Paso Aguirre and Brecknock Channel.

      Day 7:Brooke's Glacier, (Monday on Terra Australis, Friday on Mare Australis)

      Duringthe afternoon we will disembark at Brooke's Glacier where we will enjoy a delicious whisky with millennium (1000's of years old) ice. The splendour of this glacier will surprise us with its strange colors and unique reflections and clarity.

      Day 8:Magdalena Island & Punta Arenas, (Tuesday on Terra Australis, Saturday on Mare Australis)

      Early in the morning we will disembark on Magdalena Island, the home of an enormous penguin colony with over 120.000. We will take a walk to San Isidro Lighthouse, which used to guide the sailors on their way across the then hazardous Straits of Magellan. After our visit we will return to Punta Arenas where we dock at 11:00 AM and start disembarkation formalities. Here we say goodby to new friends and return to our normal and less picturesque world.
